Spaghetti Bolognese is one of those timeless meals that never goes out of style. It’s hearty, satisfying, and flavorful — and best of all, it doesn’t require fancy ingredients or complicated cooking techniques. The “Easy and Delicious Spaghetti Bolognese” recipe I’ve created is all about delivering homemade comfort food on a budget. In today’s world, where families are trying to stretch every dollar without sacrificing on taste or nutrition, this dish is a total lifesaver.
Bolognese sauce has its origins in the northern Italian city of Bologna, traditionally made with a mixture of meat, soffritto (a blend of diced onion, celery, and carrots), wine, and a small amount of tomato – slow-cooked for hours until all the flavors meld into a rich, velvety sauce. While the authentic recipe is delightful, it can be a bit labor-intensive and calls for specific ingredients that might not be readily accessible at all times. That’s why I developed this simplified version — using easy-to-find pantry staples and common ingredients like ground beef, garlic, tomato paste, and crushed tomatoes.
The beauty of this version is its balance. By incorporating red wine for depth, fresh or dried herbs for aromatic flair, and just a touch of sugar to mellow out the acidity of the tomatoes, you create a sauce that tastes like it’s been simmering all day — but actually comes together in about an hour. And let’s not forget the Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley at the end — they add the perfect finishing touches, elevating a humble sauce to something truly craveable.
What I also love about this recipe is its versatility and how well it lends itself to batch cooking. You can easily double (or triple) the ingredients and prepare a large pot of sauce over the weekend, then portion it out for freezing. This means you’ve got future meals ready to go — just boil some pasta, reheat the sauce, and dinner is done. It’s the kind of meal prep that feels effortless but makes a big impact on weeknight stress levels.
And for parents, this dish is a home run. It’s kid-approved thanks to its familiar flavors and forgiving texture. Plus, it’s easy to incorporate more vegetables, like grated carrots, bell peppers, or even spinach, blended into the sauce for bonus nutrition without sacrificing taste.
Finally, while I’ve geared this recipe toward cost-effectiveness, it never feels “cheap.” Each bite is rich, savory, and deeply satisfying. Whether you’re serving it to picky eaters, entertaining friends on a budget, or just craving some good old-fashioned comfort food, this Easy and Delicious Spaghetti Bolognese delivers — every time.
So, next time you reach for that store-bought jar of sauce, I encourage you to try this recipe instead. With minimal effort and a bit of slow simmering, you’ll have a hearty, homemade classic that might just become a regular in your weeknight rotation.

2 pounds ground beef (minced beef)
6 cloves garlic
1 can tomato paste
2 cans passata or crushed tomatoes (tomato puree with seeds removed) - 28-ounce each can
1 cup red wine - red or white–I like red, but I’ll use whatever I have on hand
4 ounces Parmesan cheese
½ bunch parsley - or fresh basil leaves
2 tablespoons Italian herbs (oregano, rosemary, thyme, and sometimes basil and parsley)
2 2 teaspoons salt - to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper - to taste
1 teaspoon sugar (white sugar) - to taste
Instructions
- Brown ground beef first in a large saucepan.
- Chop onion, garlic, and pepper while ground beef is cooking.
- When the beef is just about done, drain any excess grease, then toss in your chopped vegetables.
- Next, add in the wine, and reduce for a couple of minutes.
- Add tomatoes, tomato paste, and seasoning.
- Simmer for 30 minutes, add your Parmesan and your herbs, then simmer for 30 more minutes.
- During the 2nd simmer, in a separate pot, boil the spaghetti for about 8 minutes with a pinch of salt and a dash of olive oil.
- Drain and remove from heat if you have a lot of time left on your sauce to prevent overcooking. Enjoy!
